Put simply, heat pumps are all-in-one systems that can both heat and cool your home. However, instead of generating conditioned air like a furnace or A/C, they work a little differently. Instead, they transfer heat energy between the great outdoors and the great indoors to provide perfect comfort. In winter, a heat pump system extracts heat energy from outside—even in freezing temperatures—and moves it indoors. Then during summer, that process reverses: the unit pulls heat from inside and releases it out, cooling your house down.

Because they use natural heat energy instead of generating and forcing air, heat pumps are much more efficient than more traditional HVAC systems. In fact, they can deliver three to five units of heat for every unit of electricity they use.
