Try These Quick Tips for Fresher Air

1. Clean and Maintain Your HVAC Systems

Your home’s furnace and air conditioner need annual cleaning and maintenance to ensure top performance. Dust and dirt can build up in these systems over time, so by removing that debris on a consistent schedule, you can be sure they’re not recirculating through your home. Call RJ Heating to ask about our Comfort First Membership and get on a regular maintenance schedule.

2. Fix Leaks Immediately

If you notice leaks in your roof, through your windows, or anywhere else, have them checked and fixed as soon as possible. If you don’t, you could be at risk of mold and mildew growth—which are both unhealthy to breathe. Elevated levels of mold and mildew are especially triggering for family members who suffer from asthma, so it’s important to manage or prevent growth quickly.

3. Keep Humidity in Check

Too much moisture in your home can also lead to mold and mildew. Running fans in your bathrooms and keeping exhaust vents unblocked can help manage that moisture and improve indoor air quality. Installing a dehumidifier also brings your humidity down to a better level (less than 50 percent is ideal during warmer months).

4. Limit Chemical Usage in Your Home

Be conscious of the types of cleaning and beauty products you use. Many of them contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that could be harmful in large quantities. The same applies to home paints. Look for labels that indicate “low VOCs” to limit your exposure. When you do use these products, open windows and run fans to increase ventilation.

5. Invest in Air Purification Systems

An easy way to improve indoor air quality is to install air purification systems. RJ Heating offers air cleaners and exchangers that can clean up your indoor air and swap it with fresh air from the outdoors. We can also install energy recovery ventilators (ERVs), which control the heat and moisture of incoming air. In winter, heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) can also heat that fresh air to ensure a steady stream of warmth.
